A selection of presentations and workshops have been designated as Change Champion talks, a distinction reserved for those that showcase innovative approaches through advocacy, altruism, mentorship, humanitarianism, change management, ecosystem growth, or outreach—all efforts that drive meaningful progress. Those selected have been notified and will be highlighted in the ETOP program.
These presentations were chosen by the IEEE Photonics Education Committee for their ability to highlight initiatives that encourage public imperative participation, reduce obstacles to learning, and emphasize that technological innovation and excellence—benefiting humanity—requires the talents and perspectives of people from many disciplinary backgrounds. This work aligns with ETOP’s commitment to demonstrating how education can serve as a powerful catalyst for positive, transformative change in the fields of optics and photonics.
This series includes a general session, led by Arti Agrawal – University of Technology Sydney & Vividhata Pty Ltd.

Community building and enrichment are essential for advancing scientific education, research, and collaboration, especially in a multidisciplinary and global context. In this interactive session, participants will delve into the role of their social identities in shaping and broadening their professional journeys and interests. Social identity can offer unique perspectives that influence the way individuals engage with their work and with the broader community. By understanding and embracing the talents and perspectives of people with many disciplinary backgrounds, we can foster creativity, innovation, collaboration and academic exchange.
Participants will also reflect on their personal definition of “community” within the context of their work, exploring the challenges they encounter and their aspirations for the future growth and development of their scientific communities. Together we will share and realize what we each can contribute to achieving these aspirations, with a focus on actionable steps. The session will employ appreciative inquiry and a strengths-based approach, which helps cultivate a positive, solution-oriented mindset and motivates individuals to leverage their unique skills and perspectives as a collective. Join us to build stronger, more supportive communities that drive positive change in science and beyond.
